#OneMonthtoHealthyHair – Activity 6 – How to take care of your Scalp?

Swati · March 11, 2015 · 10 Comments

healthy scalp promotes healthy hair growth

So, I had promised you that I shall talk about scalp care but some things happened and it got delayed. Anyways, better late than never.

Just as fertile soil gives blooming plants, clean scalp helps healthy hair growth. Otherwise, it can result in weak roots, excessive hair fall, dandruff, dry scalp issues like seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and many other such issues.

I would not really go into detail but discuss about some of the major scalp issues faced by you all (the participants) – itchy scalp, dry scalp, dandruff, weak roots, oily scalp – which we face on a daily basis. Though each of these issues deserve their own posts, I am going to provide only a general outline on each of them.

Itchy Scalp

This is something I have also been facing since sometime. This is a condition which comes and goes for me. Generally, the itch increases if I do not wash my hair once in two days at least.

Now, all the scalp issues are generally inter-linked. For example, your itchy scalp can be due to dryness or due to dandruff, in which case you have to deal with either of the issues.

Sometimes, itchy scalp can ALSO be due to the products you use. If you are using harsh products on your hair and scalp, it can lead to itchy scalp as well due to the dryness. This is one of the reason I always recommend sls-free shampoo.

And, also if your scalp is dirty, it can itch so try to wash your hair once in three days at least or even daily if you are exposed to much of pollution and dust.

Now, if your itchy scalp is not because of any particular reason, I hope you have been following the Activity of the Week regularly. Scalp massages results in production of sebum which reduces scalp dryness and helps relieve the itch.

Other ways to reduce itchiness include using cooling hair oils like Navratna or even using scalp vitalizers help. My recommendations would be Biotique Mountain Ebony or I have been using this Keo Karpin hair vitalizer but I have no idea if it is available widely. I found it in one of the supermarkets. Massaging lightly after applying them relieves the itch.

Dry Scalp

So, as I mentioned above, itchy scalp can be due to dryness in which case you have to combat the dryness.

First – Regular scalp massage with bare finger tips also improve sebum production.

Second – Regular usage of essential oils helps curb the dryness.

Third – Regular after wash hair care routine ensures no scalp dryness.

Fourth – Use skin friendly products which are gentle enough for your scalp and hair.

These are just few tricks to curb the dryness of the scalp.

Dandruff

I have written quite a lot about dandruff! So, why dandruff really occurs is quite contradictory. It can occur when there is less oil or it can occur when there is more oil. So, whether you have oily or dry scalp, it really does not matter. And, dandruff is always more or less accompanied with hair fall and itchy scalp.

First – Tea Tree oil helps reducing dandruff so use this essential oil while massaging your scalp. Leave for 30 minutes and then wash off.

Second – Use vinegar treatment. It really works wonders for dandruff.

Also Read: How to get rid of Dandruff?

Weak Roots

The simplest reason why you might have weak roots is because of lack of proper nutrition, both internal and external. Your protein intake might be less or your scalp is not getting enough oxygen supply due to poor blood circulation or you are getting old and you have not treated your body in the right way or may be hormones! The reason can be anything.

And, weak roots can lead to hair fall and hair breakage. So, what you can do?

First – Eat proper food. Up your protein and iron intake which is the Activity of the week as well!

Second – This was a tip I got way 4-5 years back when I went for my first hair cut before embarking on serious hair growth. My hair stylist told me to use Vitamin E and evening primrose oil tablets in my hair oil to improve my hair volume. I do not really know how well it works because I did it for few days and then stopped it but no pain, no gain 😉

Also Read: Are these factors causing hair fall for you and how you can work around them?

Oily Scalp

Aah, this is something I really do not have much experience with. But, I do know a few tricks which really help oily scalp.

First – Henna controls the oil production so regular henna masks helps with oily scalp and oily hair as well.

Second – Vinegar is a great home remedy for oily scalp. Also, it works amazingly for dandruff as well.

So, this is just a general round up of each of the above scalp issues. But, make sure that you follow at least one of the solutions towards solving each issue. There is no healthy hair growth without healthy scalp.

balanced diet and protein for hair growth

Hey guys! Hope you had a good Sunday and you finished the Weekend hair routine! We are almost finishing one week into the event and I am so excited!

Last week I had asked you to keep massaging your scalp in regular intervals when ever you find time not only to relax yourself but also to improve blood circulation. I hope you have been doing the same regularly and without fail. Btw, it helps cure the itchy scalp problem as well.

Now, here I am with another activity which you have to incorporate into your routine.

Eat more proteins and nuts daily.

Protein is the major building block of your hair and the real cause of weak roots is more often an imbalanced diet. Especially so if you are a vegetarian. So, to fulfil the need of your daily protein intake, please start taking a balanced diet.

Everything is inter-linked actually. Your protein levels and absorption depends on how much iron you have in your system and adequate Vitamin C ensures optimum absorption of iron in your body. So, what we mean here is that a proper diet is the first key to a healthy life and hair.

Also, one banana per day will add bounce to your hair. Btw, did you know that eating one banana per day will NEVER make you obese. Banana has potassium and magnesium, the minerals required for hair which is why it is the major ingredient in the biotin drink as well.

#OneMonthtoHealthyHair – Activity 5 – Weekend Hair Care Routine – I

Swati · March 8, 2015 · 16 Comments

Happy Weekend folks!! Hope you had a great Saturday. I know I skipped yesterday because I wanted to provide you respite from the event and also to give time for the hair cut and getting a few essential oils!

And, now that it is Sunday, we can spend the entire day on hair care unless you have something planned up for today in which case I would really urge you to spend at least half hour doing what ever I have listed down today.

Pre-Wash Hair Treatment

For all those who have subscribed for the event, you would remember filling up a hair profile form. From that, I could understand one thing – MANY of you are unwilling to spend time in salons for hair care and instead would prefer to do something on a bit of home stuff instead.

So, I have designed the hair care routine keeping the point in mind. Actually, the routine is very simple. You have to choose one home remedy which has worked for you till date or something which you would like to try out. And, do it.

My preference is egg treatment. But, for those who are egg-averse, there is curd. You can also opt for the henna treatment.

Apply either of them on the scalp and hair length, leave for at least half hour or at most two hours. Follow up with a hair wash and let your hair air dry. Do not skip the conditioner. Opt for regular conditioner instead of the intensive hair treatment.

After Wash Hair Care Routine

The after care routine is just as important as the pre wash.

Scalp Treatment

You would have noticed the market is now flooded with scalp vitalizers or scalp treatments. You can also concoct some simple ones at home like green tea!

Grab any of them, pour a table spoon in a bowl, apply on the scalp using a cotton ball and cover entire scalp with it.

This helps with dry scalp and controls the itch and also helps with dandruff.

Leave-in Treatment

If you have an aloevera plant at home, take the gel and apply it all over your hair. It is the best treatment for your hair.

Otherwise, take 2-3 drops of your hair oil (or if you have the exotic ones like apricot, grapeseed or argan) and apply it along your hair length concentrating on the hair ends. It does not weigh your hair down so you do not have to worry about it!!

The above quantity is for shoulder-length hair. Adjust it according to your hair length and density.

This is all for this week. I shall share another way of weekend hair routine next week 🙂 Happy Weekend folks!

#OneMonthtoHealthyHair – Activity 4 – Essential Oils for Hair Care!

Swati · March 6, 2015 · 24 Comments

essential oils in hair care

I am extremely sorry for not turning up yesterday. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I just could not come online!!

Anyways, I had decided to keep holi free but since I skipped yesterday, I have an activity for you today 🙂

Btw, wish you all a very Happy Holi! Hope you are busy enjoying the festival of colors instead of reading the posts here 😉 So, lets get on with the activity.

Incorporate Essential Oils

If you are a regular reader, you would already know I am crazy about using essential oils. My first was lavender which I did not really become a fan of but then I went on to try rosemary and some other exotic ones and I am a fan for life. And, since then, I have tried my level best to tell you all how awesome they are. So, this is again one of the my trials.

There are a few essential oils which you must have in your house and they are multi-purpose so you can use them from healing your wounds to cleaning the air in your house! Let us check out which 5 essential oils I think are important to have in the house.

Rosemary

This one rules the roost. Since we are talking about hair care, rosemary is the one EO which stimulates hair follicles and actually helps in hair growth.

Peppermint

Though it helps the oily scalp more but it reduces dandruff and also helps in hair growth.

Tea Tree

This one helps in cleansing your scalp and reducing the dandruff. Also, helps with acne.

Lavender

This one is not really on my favourites list. But, it helps calm your senses and lulls you to sleep, helps with hair fall and is also said to help with hair growth. It definitely helps with wounds and burns, though!

And, finally, we have

Clove

Actually, there is a list of spice essential oils which are amazing for hair growth. But, clove is probably the most easily available. I would also like to include ginger and cinnamon leaf (not bark) but remember that overusing any of the spice essential oils can be irritating for the skin. But, the advantage of spice essential oils are that they stimulate the follicles and improve the blood circulation in the scalp which leads to better hair growth.

So, today’s activity is to at least get one of the these essential oils and infuse them with all of your hair products.

How to use the Essential Oils?

Pour 5-10 drops of any of the above EO in all your hair products like shampoo, conditioner, hair oil, leave-in treatment, hair masks, any DIY’s you do, and then use the products.

You can make your own Essential Oils as well!

This would not be exactly essential oil but definitely cheaper and effective treatment. This is specially easy for all the spices which are easily available in your kitchen. So, take a table spoon of your favourite spice (ginger, clove, turmeric, cinnamon, black pepper) either in ground form or you can just use your mortal and pestle and lightly break the spices to release the oils.

Put the spice in a clear bottle and cover with oil (apricot or almond are preferred as they are better at absorbing the plant nutrients) and leave for a week in direct sunlight.

Keep shaking the bottle in between to release the oils.

After a week, your customized EO is ready for use! Remember to make it in small batches and use it within a month.

Btw, since this is not exactly as potent as essential oils, you can use around two table spoons for each of your products. And, you can keep alternating using different spices every time.

So, do try out this fun DIY and I am sure you will love it!

questions on shampoo and condition hair

I know yesterday’s activity would take sometime to get completed so let us proceed to something simple! It might have been 2-3 days since you would have washed your hair in case you are following the event activities. So, I guess it is time for a hair wash.

How often should you wash your hair?

This is probably the most frequently asked questions in the hair care department. Though I would also say, daily wash is not good but there is really no hard and fast rule. So, I would just reply by saying keep your scalp clean under any circumstance.

Like I shared in this post, there are quite good reasons for washing your hair everyday. So, I think it is best suited on your lifestyle to decide when you should wash your hair. The only axiom being your scalp should be clean!

What products do you use?

That brings me to the next point being whether you use harsh products or hair-friendly products! Now, if you are the candidate who washes her hair everyday or more than twice a week, it is highly recommended to go sls-free. Though, you should go sls-free in either case.

How much can you spend?

If you want to go sls-free, the products are not exactly inexpensive. Recently, I came across a brand which was pretty unknown to me and it was about 900 bucks for shampoo and another 900 for conditioner. Same is the case everywhere.

I had been using another sls-free brand which was costing me 600+ for each of the products. So, you have to decide your budget before hand.

And, yes, do check out if you can get the colored hair range products. They are generally more gentle on hair. And, some of the salon or professional brands offer sls-free versions of the same products as well.

So, are you willing to try your hand at home remedies?

And, again I come back to the entire essence of my blog. I remember how I used to enjoy browsing all around the net searching for home remedies to take good care of my hair, both because I was on budget and because I wanted to go natural. But, that was long long time back.

Times have changed now and I am too lazy to contemplate using home remedies. Well, to be honest, they do take a lot of time and effort and create a whole lot of mess. For someone who cleans her filth on her own, I really do not want to add more burden on myself. On the other hand, the results might be worth the effort.

There are quite a few remedies which you can use to cleanse your hair and scalp instead of going heavy on shampoos everyday or even alternate days. Or, I can suggest this simple hack to make your shampoo more hair-friendly!

What do I suggest?

Aah…you know just this Sunday, someone who came across my blog told me that though my blog is informative, it is quite time taking to implement the advises! Looking beyond whether it was a compliment or a comment, I see it as a very positive and practical feedback. Honestly, I can list down scores of remedies which you SHOULD apply in your life BUT who has the time and energy, right?

And, honestly, when things get tedious, one tends to go off the track and I really do not want you to go off the track or stop enjoying these activities so let us try out simpler and more practical things. If you would ask me what I would do, I would definitely suggest you to try out the hack I talked about in the earlier point.

Or, if you are even lazier, another trick is to dilute your shampoo with a bit of water (2 handfuls of water for one dollop of sls-free shampoo and half-dollop of regular shampoo). This actually works, makes your so-expensive product last long and saves you loads of money.

How much shampoo to use?

And, yes, do not forget NOT to use more than one dollop of shampoo for one hair wash for shoulder-length hair.  And, apply shampoo TWICE in one hair wash.

It is said that the first wash removes the dirt and oil and the second helps the goodness of shampoo to penetrate the hair. But, that is hogwash. Your hair needs wash twice in a row for proper cleansing.

And, do not forget the conditioner!

When I had asked you guys (the participants I am talking about, oh yes we have team of 50 who are participating in the event so hurray to you all :)), I did get couple of people telling me that you do not use conditioner.

Start using one. It need not be the counterpart of your shampoo and it can be simple honey as well. Or, a intensive hair mask treatment. Anything!

Leave it on for 15-20 minutes while you shave off your legs or do other things and then wash off and voila, super soft hair or at least tangle-free hair.

How much Conditioner should you use?

Though there is a limit on how much shampoo SHOULD you use, you can use as much conditioner as you are comfortable with. Do not overdo it and waste the product but yes coat the hair generously ears down.

And, I use a whole LOT of conditioner and mainly focus on my ends. The lower part of your hair is the oldest and needs most intensive care so I always followed the principle of applying conditioner ears down and focusing more on the ends and coating the hair length adequately.

Try to do the hot oil treatment before washing your hair

Even if it is for 30 minutes!

#OneMonthofHealthyHair – Activity 2 – Get a Hair Cut!

Swati · March 3, 2015 · 8 Comments

#OneMonthtoHealthyHair - hair cut

So, we are on the third day of the month already! Gotta buck up. So, today’s activity is all about pampering yourself.

Get a Hair Cut!

How long has it been since you had your last hair cut?

Well, if you talk about me, I am fairly lazy and visit a parlor only after pondering on the thought for at least 15-20 days! Anyways, my last hair cut was 2-3 weeks back but I am not really happy with it.

How long has it been since you had yours?

#DidYouKnow that one should have a hair cut every 6-8 weeks to keep the split ends away. Split ends are the number one reason for damaged looking hair.

So, if you are serious about #OneMonthtoHealthyHair event, I would strongly suggest you to get a hair cut as soon as possible.

Time for some pampering

And, if you are so interested, get a hair spa as well along with the hair cut. You and your hair, both, would feel great at least for 3-4 days!

Do you cut your hair at home?

Do you believe in saving money by getting a hair cut at home? If the answer is a yes, it is a really bad practice. Hair Cuts MUST be done only by professionals using professional tools. Otherwise, it can create more hair damage.

How much hair to cut?

Let a professional analyze your hair and share your hair issues with him / her. And, I would suggest you to get rid of entire hair damage at one go than going for hair cuts in installments. Split ends have a bad habit of climbing up the hair shaft and damaging the entire hair length.
