How to Stop Getting Sick all the time after a serious illness?
Image Credits : Photo by Pixabay from Pexels

For someone who used to hardly get sick for a day in the entire year to suffering an autoimmune disease, I can relate to a deteriorated health and body. Usually, it is difficult for others to understand the agony faced by the patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, however mild or severe. Only you realize how weak your body becomes and how it is difficult to do even a simple task. It looks as if you are getting sick all the time. However, it is possible to prevent the never-ending illness.

Usually, autoimmune diseases have long term consequences on your health rather than being fatal. After you are cured, or the toughest stage has passed, building a healthy routine and body is necessary and needs discipline. Food is important to provide nutrition to the body to help combat the weakness one starts feeling after doing something as simple as bending to pick up something. Thus, it is important to strengthen your core and body internally. Building immunity is one of the crucial steps to getting better.

Also, it would be helpful to remember that just like other illnesses, there is a chance of relapse of the autoimmune diseases. This is one more reason to be extra cautious and lead a healthy life once you have recovered enough. These conditions not only affect us physically but leave a long-term mental impact on our bodies. In fact, they can weaken us enough that we keep getting sick all the time. In my case, I am highly prone to cold and cough which would not go away for weeks together.

Dot & Key Hydration Range

PSCfy Partner · November 18, 2019 · 4 Comments

dot & key hydration range

After using their hyaluronic acid and vitamin C serum, I was enthusiastic to try out the Dot & Key hydration range. Their lovely box arrived with their hyaluronic acid serum, eye cream, and two sleeping masks – one for face and one for eyes. I have never used eye products earlier very diligently before and I am in love with their sleeping masks. They are velvety and feel luxurious on the skin. Even before the review, I would definitely recommend them.

Dot & Key Hydration Range Products

I love the packaging of the brand, especially their tiny containers for eye cream and eye sleeping mask. The products would last a really long time and they look beautiful on my shelf. The Dot & Key hydration range consists of the following products:

  • Dot & Key Eye Cream Concentrate
  • Dot & Key Hyaluronic Serum Concentrate (Reviewed Here)
  • Dot & Key Eye Sleeping Mask
  • Dot & Key Skin Plumping Moisture Infusion Water Sleeping Mask

How is an Inactive Lifestyle causing your Health Problems?

How is an Inactive Lifestyle causing your Health Problems?

Leading an inactive lifestyle becomes a habit as we age. As we grow older and settle down in life with comfortable jobs, we also get habituated to how we are changing physically. However, it is not a pleasant feeling when you are no longer fitting into your shirts or dresses or when you cannot bend to tie your shoelaces. Not having a regular physical activity in our daily routine affects us both physically and mentally. According to Digit Insurance, 61% of hospitalizations is caused due to an inactive lifestyle.

According to the WHO, 60 to 85% of people in the world—from both developed and developing countries—lead sedentary lifestyles, making it one of the more serious yet insufficiently addressed public health problems of our time. (Source)

Lack of exercise or any type of physical activity not only causes high blood pressure, cardiac arrests and diabetes but also leads to elevated levels of stress, anxiety, insomnia and depression and, in some cases, even early death. It also leads to loss of focus, lack of attention and concentration along with decreased levels of energy and feeling of lethargy. Incidentally, women and older adults are more prone to lead an inactive lifestyle compared to men.

3 Ways your Inactive Lifestyle is Making you Sick

Gaining Weight

Well, sitting or being a couch potato makes you gain weight and that is no secret. Obesity is a leading disease among inactive people. And, it can lead to worse health problems including cardiac diseases, knee problems, diabetes, etc.

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil

I have long back done posts and DIY’s on how onion oil promotes hair growth and nourishes the scalp in the long run. A major drawback with onion oil is the part of squeezing out the juice and its unbearable smell. But, now, we have whole lot of onion hair oils from different brands in the market. I tried out the onion hair oil from Positive and here is my review.

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil Product Review

Price: Rs 999 for 200ml

Availability: Website | Amazon | Flipkart

Ingredients

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil ingredients

Interestingly, it has a whole lot of ingredients and it starts with onion oil. Since it has lot of spices listed over there, I assume it is an infusion process including these spices. I would have liked to know more about the extraction process or the entire preparation process of this onion hair oil. However, the packaging does not talk about it.

My Review

Before beginning with the review, let me run through my hair care routine prior to using the oil. My hair care was absolutely limited to the routine of shampoo + conditioner. I have not been taking any care of my hair in the longest time. However, I have been eating eggs pretty regularly since July which has definitely helped my hair volume and how it looks. So, here we go.

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil

When one thinks of an onion hair oil, the first thing coming to mind is the smell. And, I was both interested and concerned if this onion hair oil would be smelly, unbearable or pleasantly surprising. For me, the smell is not great at all but definitely not bothersome. It is sort of artificial which dissipates in some time.

Coming to the packaging, the hair oil from Positive comes in a dark pump bottle. The texture of this product is extremely thick and feels more like a serum than the oil. However, it spreads easily through the strands and hair length but it does some time feel heavy and greasy. I would have liked the oil to be light and smell more natural.

Positive Root Therapy + Advanced Onion Hair Oil

For all its greasy texture, the positive onion hair oil does wash off pretty well in just two washes. I have been using this hair oil for last one month once a week for around 4-5 hours. After washing, the hair does get a lot of volume and bounce. And, it lasts for a good two days which I absolutely love.

I have also noticed my scalp looks fuller. However, any hair product takes a minimum of 2-3 months to show results. There is a marked improvement with my hair loss becoming negligible and it has become a little softer. Diet does play a huge role in hair growth. Overall, Positive onion hair oil is an interesting product to try out.

Till then, Swathy.

Dot & Key Water Drench Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum Concentrate

PSCfy Partner · September 23, 2019 · Leave a Comment

Dot & Key hyaluronic acid serum
Dot & Key’s packaging is pastel and pretty!

As usual, my dilemma for finding the perfect moisturizer has not yet solved. So, after using the hyaluronic acid serum (Marine Hyaluronics) from The Ordinary, this is my second hyaluronic acid serum and I was and was completely unsure of what to expect. The best part is I am writing the review almost a month after finishing the product so I also have in mind how is my skin doing after I have discontinued the serum.

Dot & Key is a recent addition to my knowledge of brands. They have interesting products with their vitamin C and retinol serum still on the review shelf with me. After I finished the hyaluronic acid serum, I started with vitamin C serum and I am almost half way through it. As I have already said, hyaluronic acid is a great hydrating ingredient for the skin and if you have a dry skin, you should give hyaluronic acid serum a try.

Dot & Key Water Drench Hydrating Hyaluronic Serum Concentrate Product Review

Price : Rs 895

Availability : Online Website

Dot & Key hyaluronic acid serum, ingredient list

Ingredients

The packaging mentions key ingredients and not the complete set of ingredient list. The concentration of hyaluronic acid in the serum which proves the efficacy of such treatment serums is also missing. However, I am liking other ingredients in the list though the same argument goes for them too.

The concentration of ingredients is unknown because of the lack of complete ingredient list. Bulgarian rose oil and acai berry fruit oil look really interesting. Milk lipids help moisturize the skin. Ceramide 3 gets absorbed into the skin and improves the skin barrier, thus, helping the appearance of aging skin.

My Review

When used topically, hyaluronic acid creates a moisture barrier on the skin, helping to make it smoother and softer. This ingredient is able to hold up to 1000x its own weight in water, thus producing amazing benefits for dehydrated skin. (Source – https://stylecaster.com/beauty/skin-care-ingredients/)

Dot & Key hyaluronic acid serum

The serum comes in a nice blue robust bottle with a stopper. The serum is transparent and runny in texture. It has a mild fragrance to it which I did not like the first time.  But the smell did not interfere with my nose at all and dissipates as soon as I apply the serum on the face. Since the texture is runny, you have to be careful about applying it.

I started using the serum in mid-July and it lasted me almost a month with a complete pump for one time use twice a day. Since this is only a hyaluronic acid serum, it is not enough for complete moisturization so I paired it up with Organic Riot Dazzle serum. It is advisable to follow up with a moisturizer for any kind of serum or treatment you use.

As I mentioned earlier, the hyaluronic acid serum is very runny so I apply it in dots all over the face and neck and gently rub it in. The serum gets absorbed pretty quickly and does not leave any sticky feeling behind. In fact, it is easy to say skin drinks up the serum instead. However, the serum alone is not enough for me and I need to follow it up with moisturizer for sure otherwise my skin feels stretchy.

Dot & Key hyaluronic acid serum, vitamin C serum, retinol serum
Love their packaging!

The serum does make the skin glow and hydrates it from inside though on some days it might not be enough depending on how you take care of your skin and the weather outside. The hydration lasts for an entire day even if you do not wash our face at night. It keeps the skin hydrated in air-conditioned environment as well for the entire day with a moisturizer. After I finished with the hyaluronic acid serum, I could actually feel my skin getting drier.

Overall, I loved the product especially considering that it is Rs 900. There are very few hyaluronic acid serums at that price range in the market and this is one of them which does a pretty good job. So, yes, you should make hyaluronic acid serum a part of your daily skin care routine. I also have Dot & Key’s vitamin C and retinol serum up for review in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned for them!

I would like to apologize to the brand as well. This review has been delayed for too long as I could not really find time to click pictures and put them up for the review. To update you about changes in my life, I recently started working again full time and since then my routine has been all over the place which is why the posts are sporadic. I am still trying to get everything back under control.

Till then, Swathy.

How Men Can Establish and Maintain a Skincare Routine?

PSCfy Partner · August 24, 2019 · Leave a Comment

men skin care routine
Photo by Hiển Nguyễn from Pexels

When was it that routine became a dirty word? Is it just something we invariably associate with the inexorable decline into adulthood? Something we surrender our youth and spirit to like the grueling daily grind, work, bills, and taxes? Something that triggers feelings of submission and defeat?

What if routine were to clean up its act, engender youthfulness and vitality, inspire confidence and élan, envy and admiration…?

It’s true, there are a lot of routines out there you should do everything in your power to escape before it’s too late! Your skincare routine is not one of them.

Make It Simple, Make It Matter

You can add a few minutes to your morning routine and shave years off your skin and the impression you make every day.

Three words: cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize.

Your skincare routine should be simple, methodical, and intentional. An essential part of ensuring it becomes second nature is in the products, not just the practice.

What if you had a Face & Body Scrub that both cleansed and exfoliated at the same time, and did so using a natural, unique blend of certified organic lime peel oil, jojoba, ginseng, kelp, azulene and aloe? What if, indeed!

MËNAJI’s Face & Body Scrub is all that and more, and it’s designed and formulated as such so that your skincare routine is as deliberate, disciplined, and uncomplicated as possible.

Whatever you’re using to cleanse your face and body should be able to remove all that excess dirt and oil you pick up out in the world, clear and unclog your pores, and treat your skin with natural vitamins, antioxidants, and botanicals to help restore and revitalize, not just get the grime off.

Once you’ve cleansed and exfoliated, a quick, light application of moisturizer helps lock in hydration, and if your moisturizer is MËNAJI’s Power Hydrator Plus Tinted Moisturizer, then you’re also getting SPF-30 for sun protection, and subtle tinting to even out your complexion.

The sun adds years to your skin. UV rays, even on cold and cloudy days, cause wrinkles, sun spots, burns, dryness, and as we all know, even cancer. With SPF-30 sun protection in your daily moisturizer, your skincare routine is like a force field that makes you look exceptional and protects your skin at the same time.

Skincare in Minutes A Day

We are really only talking about a few minutes a day, and like we said, it’s about the products, not just the practice. You’re already showering and shaving, brushing your teeth and combing your hair, so… sorry buddy, you’re already running on the hamster wheel of routine, only this is a routine you chose for a good reason.

The thing about a skincare routine for men is that not only does your skin require much the same care and attention as a woman’s, but it needs to be practical, specifically formulated for a man’s skin, and inclusive of all the things you might not use otherwise that promote healthy, vital skin.

MËNAJI’s entire suite of men’s skincare products and cosmetics are designed specifically for men. Everything from the ClearShave 3-in-1 Formula that literally replaces the post shave rinse with a built-in botanical moisturizer you simply massage into your skin, to the Power Hydrator Plus Tinted Moisturizer that moisturizes, conceals, and protects all at the same time.

In easy-to-use pumps, tubes, and practical applicators designed for real people, MËNAJI has identified and eliminated a lot of the obstacles and inconveniences that made an efficient and effective skincare routine kind of a pain; but those days are gone.

We’ve made it easy so it can work for you, not against you. With our complete line of cosmetic and skincare products that also includes products formulated for the occasional spot treatment, concealing, deep cleansing, and revitalizing, your everyday routine will keep you at your best every day, and your commitment to going deeper will indulge and revive for the long haul.

Why You Should Quit Smoking?

PSCfy Partner · July 5, 2019 · Leave a Comment

why you should not be smoking
Image Courtesy : Photo by Petar Starčević from Pexels

Smoking is one of the dangerous habits our society is addicted to. It breaks my heart to see people who have successfully quit smoking, return to it. Their excuse is usually as flimsy as unbearable work stress or mid-life crisis. Well, how does smoking help you combat those problems, I wonder? Allow me to offer compelling reasons on why you should quit smoking.

It is extremely sad to hear people, especially those with kids, claim to smoke without the knowledge of affecting their families. Have you ever wondered how you are passing on that habit to your kids? Just because you do not smoke at home does not mean your family is not affected. You are still exposing them to second-hand smoke when you return home.

Dr. Villoo Morawala-Patell, Founder and Chairman & Managing Director of Avesthagen, is driving a “No Smoking” campaign to make smokers aware just how much danger they are inflicting on themselves, their families and everyone else on the planet. During our interaction, we got a chance to understand how smoking affects the body right from the first inhalation, why people in India do not take the warnings seriously, what can be done to spread the awareness, and why you should quit smoking.

How does smoking affect your body?

“Did you know it takes only 10 seconds for the nicotine to be absorbed by the skin and mucosal linings of the nose, mouth and lungs. This increases heart rate and constricts the blood vessels as it releases the pleasure hormones in the brain.”

Tar is responsible for the loss of enamel and tooth decay over the course of time. The nerve endings of the nose are damaged leading to loss sense of smell. When the smoke passes into the lungs, it damages the lining of the airway which is supposed to keep away the germs and bacteria. As smoke fills your lungs, carbon monoxide is released into the bloodstream in place of oxygen, leading to loss of oxygen in the body. The video gives an in-depth description of how nicotine really damages the entire body and leads to cancer.

Now, we come to something interesting. Our body is equally capable of reversing the effects of smoking. Check out the following table for a detailed timeline on how the body heals itself once you quit smoking.

How harmful is passive and third-hand smoking?

“Did you know that cigarette smoke gets into your clothes, curtains, fabrics and hangs in the air so anyone in those premises is exposed to third-hand smoke, which is the same as smoking.”

Passive smoking or third-hand smoking both have the same effects on our system as first-hand smoking, depending on the intensity of the smoke in the area. It increases the risk of developing heart disease [1] or having a stroke [2] by 25-30%, just the same as a smoker. In fact, non-smokers are more likely to develop lung diseases while living with a smoker.  Another reason why one should quit smoking.

why you should not be smoking

Socio-economic impact and lack of policies

In India, smoking bidis and chewing tobacco is a common habit among the population with lower income people. The most common reason is its ease of accessibility and affordability. What people do not realize is that the cost of these products eventually adds up contributing to their expenditure. Also, their lack of awareness about the dangers of the habit is endangering them and their families.

Small children and females are also involved in the tobacco business right from working in the tobacco plantations to making and selling the bidis. Child labor is a major concern for the country and your choice to quit the habit directly impacts the people involved in the entire industry.

Public smoking is a menace. The law is broken constantly by someone or the other. Lack of adherence to the legislation and lack of stricter policies contribute to the increasing menace instead of addressing the habit of smoking. The gruesome visualizations and constant warnings through all forms of media have made people immune. There is a serious need for a novel idea to promote awareness of the dangers caused by smoking.

Where can you start your journey to quit smoking?

Smoking is a disease of the mind. Anything and everything you do is directly related to your determination to quit the habit and maintain that state thereafter. It is easy to make up your mind to quit smoking. The difficulty is sustaining that determination in the weaker moments. Nicotine patches, e-cigarettes and seeking counseling are useful tools to help you quit. Finding support in your friends and family helps counter the peer pressure and need for fun.

I hope I have given you enough reasons today to tell you why you should quit smoking. Your sole decision to do so would help countless people and improve their lives. Smoking affects us all on a societal level.  We must tackle this habit from the grander scheme of things, starting with the individual and moving to the society as a whole.
