For someone who used to hardly get sick for a day in the entire year to suffering an autoimmune disease, I can relate to a deteriorated health and body. Usually, it is difficult for others to understand the agony faced by the patients suffering from autoimmune diseases, however mild or severe. Only you realize how weak your body becomes and how it is difficult to do even a simple task. It looks as if you are getting sick all the time. However, it is possible to prevent the never-ending illness.

Usually, autoimmune diseases have long term consequences on your health rather than being fatal. After you are cured, or the toughest stage has passed, building a healthy routine and body is necessary and needs discipline. Food is important to provide nutrition to the body to help combat the weakness one starts feeling after doing something as simple as bending to pick up something. Thus, it is important to strengthen your core and body internally. Building immunity is one of the crucial steps to getting better.

Also, it would be helpful to remember that just like other illnesses, there is a chance of relapse of the autoimmune diseases. This is one more reason to be extra cautious and lead a healthy life once you have recovered enough. These conditions not only affect us physically but leave a long-term mental impact on our bodies. In fact, they can weaken us enough that we keep getting sick all the time. In my case, I am highly prone to cold and cough which would not go away for weeks together.

Not only does this never-ending sickness take a toll on the lifestyle but also lays constant demand on finances undergoing endless routine of X-rays and CT scans to get to the root cause of the issue, not to talk about the multitude antibiotics and steroids you are put on by the doctor to suppress the chronic symptoms. Thankfully, critical conditions like cancer multiple sclerosis are now covered by the best health insurance company in India which helps reduce a lot of financial strain in the family.

How to Stop Getting Sick all the time?

Protect Your Body

Usually, you are more prone to infections due to a weakened immune system. In my case, my lower body muscles had stiffened up and it had become extremely difficult for me to sit on the floor or squat or even bend for a few seconds. Body needs a lot of rest after undergoing a serious ailment. Instead of pushing the your body, understand the body’s needs and abilities and respect it. This is a temporary phase and it will recover, do not worry. In the meantime, eat healthy and protect your body from all factors which may make you fall sick.

Nutritious Food at Regular Intervals is a Must

Along with rest, the only other nourishment your body needs is a lot of healthy diet. Nutrition given in a balanced proportion will help your body gain strength and stamina. Usually, heavy medications cause a loss of appetite and you tend to lose a lot of weight unless you are on steroids. Do not worry too much and just focus on having the best alternates instead. If you do not want to eat meals, substitute with fruits and fruit or vegetable juices or soups. Find out what works best for you and try to keep it balanced.

Regular Exercise is Important

While I would not suggest you push your body beyond its ability, indulging in regular mild exercise is important. In the earlier stages of your ailment, you would probably not feel like doing anything at all. However, as you continue with your medications, let yourself take a healthy dose of sunshine and fresh air. Take short walks or go to a park early in the mornings. It will refresh both your body and mind and will help you in the times when you keep getting sick and will keep your body active.

Do Not Lose Mental Strength

Undergoing a serious ailment takes a toll not only on our physical but also mental health. You may have recovered but your mind might still be under the same strain and it takes time for it to realize that your body has healed. Stopping the medication is just the first step towards recovery. From there on, you need to maintain strict discipline and a healthy routine to lead a better quality of life. A weakened body is prone to infections and you may keep getting sick all the time but do not lose hope.

A serious illness is akin to a milestone in a person’s life. It can either make you or break you. While relapse or the consequences are not exactly in our control, we can always decide how we would like to tackle the illness. Let us not forget that our health conditions affect our families as well, so it is our responsibility to take care of ourselves emotionally and financially. Always protect yourself with good health insurance.

Till then, Swathy.
