Is rheumatoid arthritis hereditary? {Your Opinion}

Swati · September 10, 2012 · 13 Comments

I would request you all to please answer the question in case you know any doctor, you are a doctor or you have any one in your family or friends with such cases. I need some information regd. this disease.
For the uninitiated, rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease which occurs mainly in the joints but not necessarily restricted to it. The cause of the disease is as of yet unknown but a mistaken identity flares up the disease. The white blood cells start killing the body’s own cells thinking them to be foreign substances. In case of rheumatoid arthritis, they mainly attack the joints.
Apparently, according to wiki, low levels of vitamin D can also trigger this disease. For those who do not know, Vitamin D is extremely important to prevent any disease related to the bones. So, if you are getting less of Vitamin D, I would suggest you to eat a balanced diet and get good dose of sun everyday. Also, deficiency of calcium leads to arthritis so better to get a good dose of it. Waiting for your comments 🙂

    its not hereditary but can be passed on from mother to child in the womb.also it can start showing up even at a young age.

      It doesnt pass that way Pranali….but there is some genetic relation. It manifests only if the person is susceptible.

      thr is also a possibility that the son maynot show any symptoms but still might be RA+ in blood work. but as u said, the reason why RA happens is not clear so there is chance that he might never be RA+

      hey Ray, good that you commented here…yup, i wanted to know that under what conditions can it manifest??? is it necessary that it will definitely occur in the son taking into account that father and daughter have both been afflicted with the disease to separate extents!!!

      but then everyone reacts diffrently to RA. for some ppl the deformities start in the early stages and some dont experience much joints inflamation even though the quantitative blood work come to a high percentage

      hmmm…its quite a disputed fact, in fact!!! I just wanted to know if there are chances of not manifesting. yup, the person would definitely be RA+ and chances of his getting the disease is more. thanks Pranu 🙂

    its not completely hereditary , but more often it does pass from family & most of the patients found are female. but etiology is not clear yet.rheumatoid arthritis is inflammation of joints & sorounding soft tissue , so u r right it mainly involves joints but can also affect heart , intestine & skin .

    daignostic criteria for ths is : symmetrical involvement of joints, more than 3 joints , symptons lasting for more than 2-3 mnths, manily involve small joints like hands & foot.plus morning stiffnesss
