Can aloevera be used as sunscreen? {Sunscreen}

Swati · March 30, 2012 · 41 Comments

I was checking out my analytics page and saw this in the query section. And, then, I remembered many people had asked me this particular question earlier. So, I thought I would make a post of this.

Aloevera and Sun Protection
Aloevera, in itself, doesn’t provide any sun protection of its own. It, in fact, cures the damages caused by sun’s rays.So, you can call it more a after-sun treatment than calling it a sunscreen. Aloevera is a very versatile plant which can treat sunburns as easily as it can slow down the aging of the skin. The gel has healing properties instead of protection properties.
Sunscreen
There is a reason for the existence of wide variety of sunscreens in the market. And, I have time and again asserted their importance in skin care. As a personal opinion, I would always assert that it is better to rely on products available in the market for such a product than trying out your own remedies without proper research.My personal favourites are Zinc Oxide sunscreens but a stable chemical sunscreen also does a good job. Choose one according to your budget and be regular and diligent in its application, specially, in the summers.

      the only sunscreen which I like and recommend is neutrogena dry touch…its said to be matte but its not exactly so you can do one thing – apply a good amount of sunscreen on the face and neck and other exposed areas, keep it for 15-20 minutes and then blot with tissue paper so that extra products gets soaked off. this way your skin would remain matte and pimple-free. hope this helps 🙂

      depends on the severity of the sunburn. generally aloevera is quite soothing and applied everyday time and again should help the sunburn in a day or two. at least it would reduce the severity!

      Yes, raw Aloe Vera can make your skin darker or leave you with a shade darker in certain areas if used on the face around sunlight. It is wise to use raw Aloe Vera at night time if used as a face mask. For the use of Aloe Vera in other body parts I am unsure if has the same consequences as the face under sunlight. Also, raw Aloe Vera can stain light colored clothing yellow so keep that in mind. My family loves Aloe Vera and we always have plants around but then again I live in Southern Texas so Aloe Vera grows here in the wild as well.

        but I am unsure how aloe vera gel works because those products have other ingredients added. I only know about raw fresh Aloe Vera.

      hi Yukti. use a hydrating lotion or serum and then follow up with sunscreen. not all aloevera gels in the market go easy on the face. try this one:

    Doesn’t natural aloevera burns out skin if applied in direct sunlight?

      no, Swati. it does not burn but you must apply sunscreen whenever out in sun. I would say applying aloevera is great only at night or at home treatment. it definitely can not replace sunscreen.

      hi Maria. I would say do not apply aloevera gel in the day time. apply it to soothe your skin once you are back home. opt for a day time moisturizer instead.
