Olive Oil for Hair Growth

Swati · March 17, 2010 · 22 Comments

Olive Oil is an extremely useful product not only in culinary purposes but also in skin care and hair care. We have already talked about the role of Olive Oil in Oil Cleansing Method (OCM). We will talk today about the benefits of olive oil in hair care. Olive oil is extremely light and does not easily grease the hair. It makes hair smooth and shiny and is easily absorbed.
Method of application: Warm a little of olive oil and massage it into your scalp. Keep massaging your scalp for 20-30 minutes. This will ensure better absorption. You may steam your hair after that or put hotel towels on your hair just like in hot oil treatments. You can do this at night and wash off on the next day. A regular application of olive oil would kill all the bacteria and get rid of all scalp infections. And, it would promote healthy hair growth.
You can use 2-3 drops of olive oil to moisturize your hair instead of using a leave-in conditioner. This would not weigh down your hair and keep it healthy and free from split ends.

That’s a good idea! I have a lot of olive oil at home which I previously bought to use as make-up remover but it was too oily for my skin. I’ll try it on my hair instead. Sounds like a really relaxing treatment!

I would be posting more about olive oil uses in future. So, do not worry that the olive oil at your home will get wasted πŸ˜‰

Well, is your skin oily is the first question. If yes, I would advise you to put a drop of olive oil every night on your face and see if you get any breakouts the next morning. If yes, then you sure have to discontinue it.
But, if you just have pimple outbursts from time to time, I would advise you to use olive oil when your skin is clean and free of any breakouts.
But, use only a drop every time. Using more might upset the oil production in your body and cause breakouts. In either case, you may put a table spoon of olive oil in a bucket full of bathing water and take bath with it. This would help any kind of skin without making it greasy.
I hope this helps. Do post me on your progress.

    Hey Mohana
You can wrap the towel directly around your head too. The shower cap just helps the heat to retain longer inside and also captures the heat from your scalp so better conditioning.
How much time you want to wrap the towel is entirely on to you. You need to heat the towels really hot(as much as you can bear on scalp). You can do this treatment from 15 minutes to 1 hour. Use two towels alternately. Either dip the towels in hot water or heat them in a microwave. They become cold very soon so remove them when they start losing their heat. If you allow cool towel (specially dipped in water) on your head, the rapid temperature changes may give a headache.
Hope this helps πŸ™‚ Do tell your views about the blog and if you would like to read about anything?

Do you HAVE to put a hot towel on your head or can I just skip that step?
Would taking a hot shower be a good substitute for it?

you can skip that step but heat increases the penetration of oil in the follicles so it is advised!!! you can instead heat up the oil as well to a warm temperature but don’t make it too hot otherwise it can burn the scalp.
no hot shower wouldn’t be a substitute!!

I used olive oil for my hair and it did make it shinier and softer but thicker….not really. I only really got stronger hair and less hair loss after I started using argan oil. It was called Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan oil, I ordered it online at beyas and I still use it but for frizz and to keep my hair soft πŸ™‚

generally, if you have lot of dandruff, you should not use heavy oils on the scalp.
